My English Challenge
The first year of college is about to end. The year I entered this university went by so fast. I would like to look back on one of my biggest challenges and the experience I gained during my freshman year. My challenge was going to English conversation practice at Japan Women’s University. Originally, I wasn’t good at English, but I thought it would be cool if I could speak English! This was my reason for practicing English conversation. However, this experience helped me grow much more than I had imagined. I was able discover that learning English is fun and that I shouldn’t be afraid of making mistakes.
First, I discovered that learning English is fun. In English conversation, I communicated with a native teacher and students who learned English together regardless of their grade or department. Therefore, my circle of friends expanded. I was able to study while being supported and encouraged by my friends, and I encouraged and supported them too. This helped me enjoy learning English.
The second thing I learned was to not be afraid of making mistakes. I would hesitate to speak in English because I lacked confidence. I started to understand the importance of trying to speak even if it was wrong. In addition, challenging myself to learn English also required a positive attitude and autonomy. It was not easy to do, but I think it is the part where I was able to grow the most throughout the year.
Through this experience, I came to feel that I want to communicate and interact with a lot of people. By using English, I feel like I’ve met a new world and broadened my horizons.
I would like to make use of this experience to use English on a daily basis and continue every day even after I become a sophomore.
私の英語の挑戦
大学1年生が後もう少しで終わろうとしています。大学に入って1年間は本当にあっという間でした。そこで私は、1年生で新しく挑戦したことを通して、自分自身の活動を振り返りたいと思います。
私が新しく挑戦したことは、大学の英会話に通い始めたことです。もともと、私は英語が得意だったわけではなく、英語を話せたらかっこいい！という理由だけで始めました。しかし、この経験は、私にとって想像していたよりもはるかに自分自身を成長させることができたものでした。
そこから私は、英語の楽しさと間違いを恐れないことを学ぶことができました。
まず、英語の楽しさについてです。英会話では、ネイティブの先生と実際にコミュニケーションをとり、学年や学科に関係なく英語を一緒に学びました。
そのため、交友関係が広がり、友達とお互いに励まし合いながら、勉強ができたので英語を楽しく学ぶことができました。
次に間違いを恐れないことです。
自信がないと英語で話すのを躊躇ってしまうのですが、間違ってもいいから言葉にしてみることの重要さを知ることができました。
また、それには積極性や自主性も必要となり、簡単にできることではなかったのですが1年間を通して自分自身、成長することができた部分であると思います。
このような経験を通して、私はたくさんの人とコミュニケーションをとってみたい、関わってみたいと感じるようになりました。
英語を使うことによって、私は新しい世界に出会い、視野が広がったような気がします。
この経験を活かして、日頃から英語を日常的に使っていき、２年生になってからも毎日継続していけるようにしたいと思います。
