異文化とのコミュニケーション

　I participated in the university’s New York English language training program during the spring break when I was in the first year of university. It was a short-time study abroad, just a month, but it was the first time to study abroad for me.
　I visited New York for the first time and found that the local people cherish communication. At my home stay, all the family members gathered in the living room to watch a movie every night and talked about it. During mealtimes, I talked to my host family about what I did that day. Through this, I didn’t hesitate to speak English by communicating every day. Also, when I went to the university on Friday mornings, the station staff told me on the station platform, “Today is Friday! Let’s enjoy it!” I felt that the culture where people encourage and complement each other is very nice, even if they were strangers.
　At the alumni event where I met my seniors from Japan Women’s University who are staying in New York, many of them told me that English is just a tool for communication. I heard that it’s important to have many topics that I can talk about. In fact, when I talked to a woman who goes to the local graduate school, I could have many good conversations with her because we had a common interest in playing the violin on a regular basis. Therefore, I would like to challenge myself to learn many new things and become interested in various other things.
　Recently, the number of foreigners coming to Japan has recovered, so I want to continue to study English and try to actively communicate with them.

　私は大学1年生の時の春休みに、大学のニューヨーク英語研修に参加した。1ヶ月間の短期留学で、私にとって初めての留学だった。
　私は初めてニューヨークを訪れたが、現地の人々はコミュニケーションをとても大切にしていた。ホームステイ先では、毎晩家族皆でリビングルームに集まって映画を観る時間があり、その映画について話した。食事の時間には、今日何をしたかホストファミリーに話した。毎日コミュニケーションをとることによって、英語で話すことをためらわないようになった。また、金曜日の朝大学に行く際、駅のホームで駅員さんが私に「今日は金曜日だ！楽しもう！」と言っていて、知らない人であったとしても、励まし合う文化はとても素敵だと感じた。
　日本女子大学の先輩でニューヨークに滞在されている方々と会った同窓会イベントでは、多くの先輩方が、英語はただのコミュニケーションするための道具に過ぎないとおっしゃっていた。自分がどれだけ話せる話題を持っているかが重要だと聞いた。実際、現地の大学院に通う女性と話した時、普段からヴァイオリンを弾くという共通の話題があったことで沢山会話することができた。だからこそ、沢山のことに挑戦をして、様々なことに興味を持って過ごしていきたい。
　最近、コロナウイルスも収まったため日本を訪れる外国人が増えている。英語を勉強し続け、積極的に彼らとコミュニケーションをとりたい。
